According to the World Health Organization, 9.4 million people die each year from complications related to high blood pressure. But many people with high blood pressure don't even know they have it.
Only by checking your blood pressure regularly can you tell if your numbers are high. Doctors use traditional cuff readers for this operation -- similar products can be used for home use -- but the devices have limitations.
The study, published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, suggests that home blood pressure cuffs can lead to errors due to improper shoulder straps and incorrectly positioned arms. In healthcare Settings, "white coat syndrome" -- where a patient's blood pressure rises due to the stress of the healthcare environment -- is a common problem.
Cuff devices are not suitable for larger patients. Many health technology companies are now exploring more convenient ways for people to measure their blood pressure using wearable technology.
